What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation and or sacroiliac joint dysfunction. This improves the function of the pelvis. This allows the baby optimal room and provides the opportunity for development with less restriction. However, if a woman’s pelvis remains out of alignment, a slight torsion may appear in the uterus leading to discomfort in the abdomen, low back pain, and a bigger challenge for baby to be in the most optimal position for delivery.

Any compromised position for the baby throughout pregnancy will affect his or her optimal development.

In the late seventies, Larry Webster, DC, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, noted a connection between subluxations of the sacral and pelvic bones and abnormal fetal positioning. He developed a gentle chiropractic adjusting technique (called the Webster Technique) to restore movement and alignment in the sacrum and observed that babies would regularly turn to the vertex position on their own after the adjustment.

  • Many Chiropractors are trained and certified in the Webster Technique

  • A webster certified chiropractor will use special tools, including special tables that allow pregnant women to lay face down, while safely supported by pillows to receive a comfortable adjustment.

  • The Webster Technique involves analysis of the pelvic bones. Correction of a sacral subluxation is applied via specific, low force chiropractic adjustment.

  • Abdominal muscles and soft tissues are evaluated and gentle release is performed on tightened structures.
