Healthy, Tiny Spines

Each year, more and more parents take their children to be adjusted by a Doctor of Chiropractic who specializes in the care of children. Chiropractic adjustments for children are gentle, safe and promote a healthy spine and nervous system for developing bodies. From birth, a child’s spine will undergo forces which can create abnormal positioning of the vertebra (subluxations). The bones which make up the spine house the nervous system. When subluxations are present, interference in the nervous system occurs which interrupts the transmission of information between the brain, spinal cord and the body. The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being. Some symptoms of nervous system interference in children include digestive trouble (colic, reflux, and constipation), chronic infections (sinus and ear), trouble sleeping, difficulty nursing, behavioral problems, low energy, inability to concentrate, headaches and impaired development, to name a few.

As children grow, their musculoskeletal system develops and becomes stronger. It is important that their bodies are properly balanced and aligned as they go through the growth process. Spinal trauma is unavoidable during infancy and childhood as the child learns to sit, stand, crawl, run and walk. Sports and other physical activity are leading causes of spinal subluxation in adolescents. Initially, the spinal subluxation may not cause any pain or symptoms, but if left uncorrected may manifest into developmental delay or other unfavorable outcomes. A Doctor of chiropractic who specializes in pediatric care will examine your child’s spine and determine the extent of any subluxations present. Your child’s treatment plan and adjustment will be customized for them individually based on their age, size and degree of subluxation. Most healthy children function best with adjustments every 1-2 months. Most children enjoy their chiropractic visits and look forward to subsequent visits. Parents report improved sleep, decreased irritability and less illness when their children are adjusted regularly. Having your children adjusted on a regular basis allows for healthy flow of information between the central nervous system and the rest of the growing body, allowing for optimal function of systems and reduced pain.

Your child’s health is their greatest asset. Let their health be expressed to the fullest potential through chiropractic care!
